Why are linen clothes so expensive?

If you want to buy a piece of good-quality pure linen clothing, whether through offline or online purchasing channels, you will find that clothing made of pure linen is usually more expensive than clothing made of other common materials such as cotton.

Why are linen clothes expensive? We have summarized the following reasons. Let’s take a look~

1. Natural resistance to bacteria and insects

Flax is amazingly naturally resistant to bacteria, mites and insects.

This quality is very unique and is common in any linen garment, especially pure linen sheets, which explains why sheets are more expensive than other sheets.

Since this fabric resists bacteria, fungi, and bugs, it’s also a great choice for anyone with allergies.

2. Hygroscopicity

Whether you're buying linen clothes, linen sheets, or linen towels, it's highly absorbent.

If your sheets absorb moisture, they will be more comfortable to sleep on. Bath and kitchen towels made from linen are very practical and beautiful. And antibacterial and anti-fungal.

3. Longevity

Linen gets better with time!

Unlike most fabric materials that become brittle over time and use, linen is soft when you first touch it and gets softer over time.

With good care, linen fabrics can last for decades!

4. Environmental protection

Cotton uses a lot of water and pesticides, while flax uses less water and does not need pesticides because of its natural insect repellent properties.

Being environmentally friendly and living in harmony with living things makes linen a sustainable fabric worthy of our trust.

5. Rare fabrics

Natural fibers account for less than 20% of global textile use, and flax accounts for less than 2% of natural fibers.

You can see cotton bedsheets everywhere in shopping malls, but you rarely see pure linen bedsheets. Things are rare and expensive, so linen clothes are naturally

more expensive.

6. Requirements for growth conditions

Flax plants grow best in cool climates, moderate temperatures, sufficient sunshine and sufficient rainfall. France, Belgium, Italy, Ireland, etc. have become ideal places

for high-quality linen production.

The higher cost of living, labor, and business in these areas also contributed to the high cost of linen.

7. Difficulty in harvesting

From sowing to harvest, the maturation time of flax is about 90-100 days.

In fact, in order to maximize the length of fiber that can be harvested, the plant must be uprooted rather than simply cut.

Field management and maintenance, harvesting costs, transportation, etc. also add to the cost of linen.

8. The production process is slow

Weaving linen is a real art, and because the fibers are harder and break easily, linen is relatively difficult to work with compared to cotton.

More expensive linens were woven by hand, and often the machines that woven linen were slower, so a lower yield of linen was produced in the same amount of time.

9. Production cost

Linen is different from other fabrics in that it wrinkles easily, has no elasticity, and absorbs moisture, which forces designers and tailors to spend more energy and time

to present a perfect linen work.

When you understand that linen is a naturally skin-friendly, low-carbon, antibacterial and hard-to-obtain fiber, you will understand why linen clothing is so expensive.

But hope these will not stop you from letting linen, an excellent fabric, enter your life.

Please believe that it will bring you a lot of goodwill and beauty, and you and it can have decades of good times with each other!
