Linen Bedding Aesthetics

Cotton is one of the most popular and affordable options when it comes to choosing the right bedding.

However, when it comes to cotton sheets, you get what you pay for. Those less expensive sheets can be stiff, itchy, and only last a year or two before they feel worn or uncomfortable.

Although flax fibers initially require a lot of time-consuming and constant cleaning to complete the soft spun yarn used to weave linen, the fabric is durable and will only get better with time.

Linen bedding is such a trend perhaps because of its effortless yet sophisticated aesthetic; linen is known for the way it easily dresses up spaces thanks to its natural fibers.

Yes, it has creases, but it's all part of the aesthetic - blending seamlessly into any space.

What are the benefits of sleeping in linen?

Linen retains its shape due to its natural elasticity and is 2 times more durable than wool and cotton. Still, unlike similar products, it actually gets softer and more comfortable with use and washing.

In addition to its look and feel, linen is temperature regulating, antistatic, antibacterial, and is a natural insulator. This means it has temperature-regulating properties that keep you warm in winter and cool in summer without overheating your body.

Linen is a trans-seasonal bedding solution that dries quickly so its moisture-wicking properties act as an effective antiperspirant during the warmer months. Linen can hold up to 20 times its weight in moisture, making it the ideal material for uninterrupted, clean sleep.

How to care for linen?

With proper care, linen can last a lifetime.

Starting with cleaning, it is best to use soft water and avoid hard water or water with a high lime content. If this cannot be avoided, softeners can be added, especially for dark linens.

While some people choose to hand wash linen, you can wash linen in the washing machine in warm or cold water and use a mild laundry detergent, avoiding detergents that contain brighteners, as these can weaken the fiber properties and discolour the linen. Finally, rinse the linen thoroughly with clean water to prevent oxidation of the fabric due to unremoved traces of laundry detergent.

Natural shade drying is better for linen, or tumble dry on low; avoid dry cleaning as linen may react adversely with chemicals used in the dry cleaning process.

The linens require no ironing and the natural creases enhance the aesthetic. After letting the linens dry thoroughly, linen storage bags are the perfect choice for storing linens instead of airtight plastic bags.

What is Premium Linen?

First, make sure you're buying 100% linen and not a linen fabric that's been combined with other fibers, even natural cotton fibers.

If the linen is prewashed, it will be softer and ready to use; if it is not prewashed, it may be rough to the touch, although pure linen will always soften over time.

If the linen is dyed, it's worth asking the clerk if the dye is environmentally friendly and if it's been treated with chemicals like formaldehyde, as this can affect quality.

Finally, be aware of where the flax itself is grown – most premium brands source their flax from Europe.
